How is Lean Body Mass (LBM) calculated?

The Lean Body Mass can be calculated using three different formulas as set forth below to find the lean body mass.

Boer Formula:

Male : (0.407 * weight in kg) + (0.267 * height in cm) – 19.2

Female : (0.252 * weight in kg) + (0.473 * height in cm) – 48.3

The Lean Body Mass for males can be calculated by height in centimeters multiplied by 0.267, then adding the weight in kilograms multiplied by 0.407, and finally subtracting 19.2 to get the result.

For females, the Lean Body Mass can be found by multiplying the height in centimeters by 0.473, the weight in kilograms by 0.252, and then subtracting 48.3 from the total.

James Formula:

Male : (1.1 * weight in kg) – 128 * (weight in kg / height in cm)2

Female : (1.07 * weight in kg) – 148 * (weight in kg / height in cm)2

The James Method is a formula used to calculate Lean Body Mass for males, involving multiplying weight in kilograms by 1.1 and then subtracting 128 from the result to find the first component. Simultaneously, dividing weight in kilograms by height in centimeters produces a quotient that is squared to get the second component. The Lean Body Mass for males is obtained by multiplying these two components.
For females, their Lean Body Mass is determined by multiplying their weight in kilograms by 1.07 and then subtracting 148 from the result to get the initial component. Additionally, dividing weight in kilograms by height in centimeters and squaring the resulting quotient derives the second component. The Lean Body Mass for females is then calculated by multiplying these two components.

Male : (0.32810 * weight in kg) + (0.33929 * height in cm) – 29.5336

Female : (0.29569 * weight in kg) + (0.41813 * height in cm) – 43.2933
